Culpepper Garden consists of four independent nonprofit corporations set up to comply with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requirements. Each corporation is led by a board. All four boards have the same volunteer board members.
- Culpepper Garden I provides independent living residences and services for 211 low-income seniors.
- Culpepper Garden II provides independent living residences and services for 65 low-income seniors.
- Culpepper Garden III provides assisted living residences and services for 73 low-income seniors who need help with activities of daily living, such as bathing and dressing, meal preparation, and medication management.
- Arlington Retirement Housing Corporation (ARHC) raises funds and provides community outreach for Culpepper Garden I, II and III.
Local Partnerships
We also benefit from close ties with our partners in the community.
Culpepper Garden would not exist without the guidance and support of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, whose board of trustees authorized the planning committee that eventually became the Arlington Retirement Housing Corporation. The church and its members have provided ongoing leadership and support for more than three decades.
Arlington County also has been a long-time supporter of Culpepper Garden, providing on-site services for residents as well as essential financial assistance. In addition to subsidies to help some of our residents pay rent, the county provides subsidies to defray assisted living costs for some residents, which can run as high as $2,500 per month per resident. The county also provides subsidies to cover the costs of additional meals for a limited number of independent living residents.
*Rent for residents of Culpepper Garden I is not subsidized but is affordable. Rent is this building ranges from $500 to $632 per month.

| Our residents are low and moderate income. For most, their rent is based on their annual income — but often they need extra help to cover daily expenses like meals and medications. We count on the generosity of donors to subsidize these essentials, as well as for longer-term expenses, such as vital safety upgrades to our buildings. |
